The Burton Mail reports that SSE Renewables has dropped plans to develop a wind farm at Bagot's Park

Wind farm plans dropped

In April 2011 East Staffordshire Borough Council refused permission for the development of a wind farm at Bagot’s Park in Abbots Bromley.

The proposed development was of considerable concern to many residents in Abbots Bromley and Marchington Woodlands. However, several other Parish Councils in the area also opposed plans due to the effect on the landscape of the proposed 360 foot high turbines.

The Burton Mail (link expired) reports a spokesperson for SSE Renewables confirming that they have no plans to appeal against the refusal and that they do not now consider the site large enough for viable development in their current operating context.

Get out and about with Ridware YFC

Ridware YFC have had an exciting and diverse couple of months starting with building a raft in order to take part in the County Raft Race on the River Dove. A Curry Night was held at the Red Lion Inn at Newborough and also a very interesting and informative tour was taken round Freedom Brewery at Abbots Bromley. The next event was a Royal Visit. Princess Anne visited the County Office in Staffordshire and each club within Staffordshire was invited to demonstrate one of their skills. These ranged from flower arranging to butchery to stock judging to Tug of War. Ridware’s demonstration was their club display and cattle preparation and the Princess showed a real interest in all that she was shown. Each member felt privileged to have had the opportunity to chat to the Princess Royal and it was an excellent day for Staffordshire Young Farmers.

Abbots Bromley wins Best Kept Village

When the results of the 2011 Staffordshire Best Kept Village Competition were announced at Rodbaston on 1st August, Abbots Bromley was declared the best kept large village in East Staffordshire. The runners up in our group were Yoxall and Branston.

Across the whole of Staffordshire, Haughton was the best kept large village.

In commenting on the win, Chairman of the Parish Council Roger Jarman said, “A superb effort from the whole village, particularly Roger Mills and Philip Charles who championed the cause from the Parish Council.”

Ridware YFC news

The last couple of months have been busy for the members of Ridware as they have had a diverse programme of events – ranging from a tour of the Meynell Hunt Kennels, kindly organised by members John and Sam, to a Curry Evening held at the Red Lion at Newborough. Following this the members were tutored in the skills of Dairy Stock Judging, in readiness for the county stock judging competition, and they were also given an opportunity to see a robotic milking system in action in Harlaston, kindly hosted by the Hill family. There was also a trip to the Snowdome for an evening of ice skating and fun. Regular business meetings are also held and we would like to thank the Meynell Inn at Hoar Cross for allowing us to use their room for these gatherings.

However, if you think that was a busy time then it gets even more hectic as the preparation for the County Rally gets under way. This is a day of competitions that range from cookery to tractor handling to flower arranging to sheep shearing and much, much more so if it is diversity that you are looking for then Young Farmers is the club for you! It is a great opportunity for anyone with a yearning to learn new skills and put them into practice and if you already have a talent for something then why not show others how it can be done!

Another popular event on the horizon is of course the County Show in which the Float Parade in the Main Ring is a big draw on visitors to the show. This is an opportunity for the members to build their float to depict a TV advert. Ridware has chosen Country Life Butter so expect to see a few ‘cows’ and see if you can spot Johnny Rotten! If you have any artistic skills then the float building meetings will appeal to you as many hands and paintbrushes will be required to turn a rusty old farm trailer into a scenic country landscape.

2011 Annual Report available

The first issue of the annual report is now available and contains updates from the Parish Council and various village organisations. The document can be viewed on-line.

A final version of the report will be issued after the Parish Assembly and will be announced in a Parish Council newsletter.

Wind Farm planning application refused

At a special meeting of the East Staffordshire Borough Council Planning Committee on Thursday 31 March 2011, the application for a wind farm was rejected by a majority decision.

SSE Renewables has the right to appeal the decision with the Secretary of State.

Revised surgey opening hours

These changes will bring the practice in line with national guidelines and will enable patients to access general information and advice from a receptionist from 8am to 6.30pm by phone or in person, Monday to Friday.

As a result, evening surgeries will be starting earlier to allow for prompt finishing. This will not affect any other services held at Abbots Bromley, including provision of medical or nursing care. If you need to speak to a Doctor or a Nurse please contact the surgery in the usual way.

Abbots Bromley Hospital looks for new trustee

Abbots Bromley Hospital is responsible for nine Almshouses in the village and is looking for a suitably qualified local person, preferably with accountancy skills, to fill a vacancy left by the departure of a long-standing trustee who has moved away.

Trustees are appointed from both the community and the parish council and in a concerted effort to gain interest from a broad and diverse range of people, the Trust is advertising to fill a position for the first time in its history.

Mithra Tonking, chair of the Abbots Bromley Hospital Trustees, said:
“The Trust has a long and distinguished history of helping individuals in need of housing in Abbots Bromley and being a trustee is an important and rewarding role. The ideal person will have an interest in the local community in or around Abbots Bromley and is a qualified accountant or possesses strong financial acumen.”

The role of trustee involves attending four meetings of the trustees each year. Interested individuals should contact the Trust Administrator, Mrs Christine Jones, on 01283 840420.
